When we first envisioned Crystal Youth, it was as much a storytelling project as a band. The idea was for our music to complement the epic journey of two characters—the Dreamer and the Voyager—who embodied who we are as artists. Through blog posts and other media, their stories were intended to unfold, tying our music to a narrative of dreams, exploration, and introspection.
However, as time has passed, we’ve realised that while this concept was ambitious and exciting, it also placed limitations on us creatively. It confined us to specific themes and styles, preventing us from fully exploring the breadth of our artistic vision. For example, our Christmas singles couldn’t naturally fit into the story, and as two deeply political individuals, we feel strongly that the times we live in demand that we use our voices to speak out through our art.
Writing and maintaining the story of the Dreamer and Voyager also proved incredibly time-consuming, often taking time away from what we love most: making music. Balancing this storytelling element with our musical goals became unsustainable.
In addition, many of the tracks on Horizons originated years ago, and we’ve grown significantly as artists since then. While the Dreamer and Voyager will always represent values we hold dear—dreams, exploration, introspection, and the grand journey—we feel it’s time to let go of tying our music directly to their narrative.
As such, we’ll be retiring this section of our website. This decision allows us to move forward without creative boundaries, embracing all the themes and genres that inspire us, whether they be fun and nostalgic or deeply thought-provoking.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us through this evolution. Crystal Youth is, and always will be, about connection—through music, stories, and shared dreams. We can’t wait to explore this next chapter with you.
With love and gratitude,
Michael & Ayesha
